Preserving Heritage, Restoring the Wuriyanga Mosque
In the early 20th century, a group of immigrants from Nuriyala in Burkina Faso embarked on a journey to Yikoti, Bawku in Ghana’s Upper East Region, seeking better opportunities. They settled in a fertile and peaceful area, which they named Dari-Salam, meaning “Land of Peace.” This area is now known as Wuriyanga. Among their first contributions to their new home was the establishment of the Wuriyanga Mosque in the early 1940s.
The Wuriyanga Mosque holds great historical significance, recognized as the oldest mosque in the region. However, due to years of poor maintenance and harsh weather conditions, this iconic landmark has deteriorated over time.

Today, we are thrilled to announce that the African Youth Culture and Creativity Agency (AYCCA), with the support of the International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage in Conflict Areas (ALIPH), has launched an initiative to restore the Wuriyanga Mosque.
This restoration project goes beyond preserving a building; it’s about safeguarding our cultural heritage, bridging the inter-generational knowledge gap, and empowering the local community. By revitalizing this mosque, we aim to promote tourism and enhance economic opportunities for the indigenous people of Wuriyanga.
The Wuriyanga Mosque is not just a historical site; it’s a symbol of the community’s resilience and cultural identity. By restoring this iconic landmark, we are preserving the history and traditions of the people who built it.
We believe that this project will have a profound impact on the local community, promoting cultural exchange, understanding, and economic growth. We are committed to working closely with the community to ensure that the restoration project is done in a way that respects and honors their heritage.
The restoration of the Wuriyanga Mosque is a testament to the importance of preserving our cultural heritage. We are proud to be part of this initiative and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the community.
Join us in this effort to preserve our cultural heritage and restore the Wuriyanga Mosque to its former glory. Together, we can safeguard our history and promote a brighter future for generations to come.
